SEGES Case Study

Agricultural Usage with SEGES Innovation

SEGES Innovation, a leading provider of agricultural tools, uses ClearSKY's AI-generated cloud-free satellite imagery to enhance the imagery cadence in their CropManager solution.

The Challenge

Cloud cover frequently obscures satellite images, making it difficult to gather timely data for precision agriculture. In autumn 2023, Sentinel-2 imagery was again unavailable, preventing SEGES from providing accurate nitrogen recommendations for Danish farmers. SEGES turned to ClearSKY to provide consistent, cloud-free imagery, ensuring accurate nitrogen recommendations for more than 18,000 rapeseed fields.

The Solution

ClearSKY's AI-generated satellite data enhanced the natural cadence of Sentinel-2 through data fusion with Sentinel-1 and Landsat 8/9. This removed the cloud cover problem and delivered reliable vegetation maps in near real time. SEGES used NDRE (Normalized Difference Red Edge) values to assess crop health and inform nitrogen recommendations.

Impact

By comparing traditional cloud-free Sentinel-2 images with ClearSKY cloud-free imagery, SEGES observed significant improvements:

  • NDRE values predicted a 28% difference in crop health.
  • Average reduction of 24 kg nitrogen per hectare.
  • Across 125,000 hectares of rapeseed, savings of more than 3,600 tons of nitrogen.

ClearSKY data is now integrated into SEGES's CropManager platform, enabling farmers to receive timely, data-driven insights for crop management regardless of weather conditions. SEGES farmers have access to ClearSKY imagery with a two-day cadence year-round.
